How To Teach Kindergarten Sight Words
To begin, simply introduce your child to the list .
Read all of the words to your child and explain that he will be learning a new word every day . Be excited about it.
On day one, see if your child knows any of the words. If they do, put a sticker, a checkmark, or a smiley face to the left of the word . If not, thats OK! He will.
Every single day, go over the new word, as well as the OLD words that they know. I start by going over the old words with the sticker and then picking a new word. I say it, spell it, say it again, and ask my child to repeat it.
During the day, we will talk about that word and go back to the wall where it is hanging to look at it. I do this at least three times. I keep my chart in the pantry, so anytime our kids eat a snack or want to grab something, they see the words.
Continue to add a sticker, checkmark, or a smiley face to their new words, until the whole list has been completed. From then on, you can just review them every day or every few days.

These words often do not sound out with phonics rules and it benefits the reader to just memorize them. Second, the Fry 100 sight word list is the list of 100 sight words that are used the most frequently out of all words. These 100 sight words are generally memorized by the end of kindergarten.
When Should Fry Words Be Taught
In a traditional school setting, Fry words are often taught as early as kindergarten. Once children are familiar with the alphabet and letter sounds, you can begin introducing Fry words. Start with only five to ten words. Once a student masters that list, add five to 10 more, but continue to review the previously mastered words.
Generally, children are expected to master 20 sight or high-frequency words by the end of kindergarten and 100 by the end of first grade.
In a homeschool setting, let your child’s developmental readiness be your guide. Some children are curious, eager learners who are ready to start learning high-frequency words as early as three-years-old. Others may not be ready until first or second grade or even later.

These sight word lists are not the same, but sometimes you will hear them being used interchangeably. The Dolch sight word list came from an educator in the 1930s known as Dr. Edward William Dolch. He invented this list because he found them appearing often in childrens books. He also added a noun list as well.
Dr. Edward Fry came along in the 1950s and revamped the Dolch list by adding and omitting words due to relevance. In 1980 after another list update, these 1000 words became the Fry Sight Word List.

Ways To Teach Kindergarten Sight Words
We know that every child learns a little bit differently, so having many different ways to practice and engage with the sight words is important for memorization. One important thing to remember is that before a child can begin memorizing sight words, they need to understand the basics of letters and sounds. Otherwise, sight words are going to be a very abstract concept.
The key is keeping the review activities enjoyable for your child. You can switch things up and rotate through this list every week, or you can stick with the ones your child finds the most interesting.
For kindergartners to master their sight words, they need to practice and review the words every day for 10 to 15 minutes. Remember, children at this age learn best in small increments. So, if you notice your child is becoming frustrated or uninterested, take a break and start again later or switch up your learning activity.
Also keep in mind that you only want to introduce 3-5 unfamiliar words at a time. This gives your child enough time to learn the new words while practicing the mastered words before moving on.

Fry words are listed by how frequently they appear in literature and the English language. So, the first 100 words included in the Fry list are the 100 most common words. They are broken down into groups of 25 below.

How To Make Your Sight Word List:
The first thing I do is create a sight word list using a mixture of curriculum words, Dolch, and Fry sight words. Most Kindergarten curriculums have between 20 and 40 words. I put one or two words in each list. That way, my students are learning the curriculum sight words as we come to each unit and week number.
Then, I look at the Dolch and Fry lists and add words throughout my sight word list. I use easy words like see and am in the beginning of the year, and add tougher words like they and find towards the end. I also add in a color word to each list.
This sight word master list has 6 words per list and 3 lists per color, which totals 144 words. I know that is way over the 100 words in a year, however, I include 36 challenge words- the purple and pink lists. Some students fly through sight words and need more of a challenge, so these lists are for them. About half of my students end the year either working on the challenge words or finishing the whole list.

Why Make The First 100 Sight Words With Pictures
Other elements besides words and alphabet in worksheets are pictures. If you want to make it into worksheets with the user aimed at children at the first-grade level, using pictures is quite effective in conveying the knowledge they need. With pictures, it will be entertainment as well as additional lessons related to the sight words used. Vocabulary owned by children will develop over time. Without realizing it, not only the first 100 sight words can be understood by children, but also vocabulary and understanding related to pictures and sight words that are appropriate for use in writing.

Can I Make Flashcards With The First 100 Sight Words
Tools that are often used to help the learning process in children’s flashcards. If the worksheets are a large and detailed version for placing the content of the first 100 sight words, then flashcards come as a flexible version of the tool. Using flashcards to learn sight words is a good idea because you’ll learn them faster by being able to carry them around with you. These flashcards are the same as worksheets that contain sight words and activities related to how to learn them.
