I have to start this list with the king of rhyming: Dr Seuss! Dr. Seuss books are so much fun to read with and to children because they are so silly and have that engaging sing-song rhythm.
One of my favorite things about Dr. Seuss rhyming books is the many teachable moments.
I point out the rhymes that he made and ask my students Is that a real word or a nonsense word? Why would he make up a word? Its because hes completing a rhyme!
Allowing a child to figure this out helps them understand the concept of rhyming more fully. #winning
Frog on a Log
This book features a ton of classic, easy to understand rhymes.
All of the animals in the book have to sit on the object they rhyme with. The frog does not want to sit on a log, but cat tells him thats just how things are.
Kids love the story in this book as well as completing the rhymes.
Bonus: There is a sequel! Dog on a Frog will be another fast favorite with your little readers. I can say that with certainty because both of these rhyming books are read often in my classroom!
This is a heartwarming story about being kind and including those who are different. Ricky just wants to roll around with his friends but he has a flat side.
The book has some funny elements and ends with a positive message.

What Makes A Book Great For 1 Year Olds
There are a variety of books for little ones out there, but the best ones depend on whos reading them. If you want books to read to your child while theyre sitting on your lap or at bedtime, you can opt for a higher-level book with pages.
For independent reading from your one-year-old, board books are the best choice as they can turn the pages easily and are typically geared for younger toddlers.
Board books with fun features make it even more engaging for your 1-year-old. These include:
Books that rhyme and have repetition are always preferred by toddlers. Eventually, they learn the rhymes and repeat them with you.
If your toddler has favorite things, like tractors or unicorns, grab some books around these topics. Your child will love that!

Introducing Dr Seuss books to your kids is one of the fun parts of beinga parent. My three kids absolutely adored them and it was a bonus thatmy husband and I loved reading them because they were firm favourites inour house for many, many years.

Seuss Books Offer Bright Colorful Creative And Interesting Characters
Amber Tiano, a kindergarten teacher at Northwestern Elementary School, said children are drawn to Seuss’ “bright and colorful illustrations, creative and interesting characters” and use of rhythm in poetry.

“I think the silly, quirky rhymes are most appealing to children,” Silchuk-Ashcraft said, pointing out many adults can still repeat them by memory.
Seuss’ books “encourage children to develop a love of reading,” said Beth Brawley, manager of the Doylestown branch of the Wayne County Public Library. They “offer important messages in a rhyming fashion that draw a child into the story.”
Seuss books also show “it’s fun to be silly, and being silly while reading is fun,” Tiano said.
She will be making green eggs and ham with her students in honor of one of their favorite Dr. Seuss books. They will have the opportunity to taste test whether they like that concoction.
Tiano planned to bring to class the ingredients, including green food coloring a griddle and even her husband, who will act as an assistant taking directions from the students on each step of the recipe.
That means if they tell him to put an egg in the bowl, he won’t crack it first unless specifically instructed.
Students will also take turns following portions of the recipe themselves, she said.
How Children’s Books Become Classics
Dr. Seuss is a pseudonym for Theodor Seuss Geisel, who published his first book in 1937.
“He started writing books at the beginning of the baby boom,” said Susan Roberts, assistant director of the Wayne County Public Library, “and so tapped into a huge market.”
“And the huge baby boomer cohort grew up, read them to their kids and now to their grands and great-grands,” Roberts said. “That’s how children’s books become classics.”
Parents wanted to share the books they enjoyed when they were young with their own children, said Daphne Silchuk-Ashcraft, director of the Orrville Public Library.
Roberts also attributes part of Seuss’ success to “writing in a very new way.” His “I Can Read,” or First Reader, books were ahead of their time. It’s a genre that got its real start in the 1950s and ’60s, she said.
Rhyming and repetition of easy sight words is “key to how help emergent readers,” Roberts said.
“They were some of the first books my children read by themselves, although it was through memorization they could so easily work through the pages,” Silchuk-Ashcraft said.
Children being raised on “boring school readers think ‘Dick and Jane,'” Roberts said, were quick to embrace Seuss stories, which were “colorful, catchy and memorable, a lot of fun.”
That’s what attracts children to his books today, according to area teachers and librarians.

Schools Plan Fun Learning Activities Around Dr Seuss Books
Other activities correlating with Dr. Seuss books, beyond the traditional dressing up and wearing a Cat in the Hat-styled hat, are stacking red cups and white paper in a pattern for a tower and making Thing 1 and Thing 2 headbands in Tiano’s class.
Wearing pajamas to school and bringing a stuffed animal for a cozy reading break were on the agenda at Shreve Elementary School in the Triway district as was engineering a box for Mr. Knox and a stack of bricks for Fox.
Wooster Township Elementary School first grader Samuel Leeper’s favorite Dr. Seuss book is “Green Eggs and Ham, he said, admitting it is because he shares the same name Sam as one of the main characters.
For different reasons, several first-grade students agreed with Leeper’s choice.
His teacher, Tammy Finney, said it is one of her favorites as well in fact, she incorporates it into whatever subjects she can, including math.
Like Tiano’s class, Finney’s students are going to sample green eggs and ham.
“We will see how many kids liked it and how many didn’t,” Finney said. “Then use tally marks and graph the results.”
One of Leeper’s classmates, Nina Boothby, favors “The Cat in the Hat.”
“It’s very funny, and it’s fiction,” she said.
“All age groups love Dr. Seuss, but children especially enjoy the books from birth to around third grade,” Brawley said.
As for Seuss’ lasting impact, Roberts said, “I think the Grinch has become such a part of Christmas, that book alone would have made him an icon.”
When Should You Start Reading To Your Baby
Even the youngest of babies can benefit from seeing the pictures in books and following the patterns and rhythms of your voice as you read. Even as new parents, you can start make a habit of reading to your kids as soon as theyre a few weeks old. Just hearing the sound of your voice will offer so many benefits, even at this young age.
Then, once you have established some routines and gotten into a groove, introduce reading into your babys bedtime routine . And then try to stick to this daily and truly make reading a priority in your home.
I subscribe to the idea that if you arent reading, you arent learning. And this goes double for my kids!

First 100 Words By Roger Priddy
Every toddler needs to have this in their collection of board books. This is the classic version, but they also sell a farm-themed book that toddlers love.
This book has pictures of the 100 most common first words for toddlers. Start by reading the words and pointing to the pictures for your toddler, but as he gets older, you can ask your child to point to the pictures when you say their name. Its a great way to build your one-year-olds speech and vocabulary.
Later, this book helps to teach sight words to your early readers.

Reading To Your Baby Age By Age
Reading with your baby will look a little different as they grow from stage to stage.
Newborns : When your baby is in the newborn stage from months 0-3, they will be growing rapidly and adjusting to their new environment outside of the womb. Reading gives them an opportunity to help develop their eyesight, so board books with high-contrast colors such as red, black, and white will be visually stimulating and appropriate for this age. Sit on an armchair with your baby during their awake times and read 1-2 books per day. Let your baby have a chance to look at the pictures.
4-6 Months: During this stage, your baby will be more alert and attuned to the world around them. Theyll be more interactive than in the newborn stage, and will have become familiar with your daily activities and routines. Reading begins to take on a more important role in your babys day and theyll love seeing vivid colors and bright pictures. At this stage, you could introduce short board books with 1-2 sentences per page. Your little one will be captivated by what they see and will be exploring the world around them by touching things and putting them in their mouth including books. Let them play with durable board books, Indestructibles, and sensory books that have different textures they can play with.
Still, I like to read above my childrens reading level so I would read any of the books to my baby from about 3 months on.

How To Get My 1
If you didnt read to your child throughout infancy, dont feel bad. Many parents wait to start reading to their child its NEVER too late.
When your toddler is busy, it might feel like theyll never like books, but they will. The first trick is to read to your one-year-old at least once per day or more.
Pick regular times to read to your one-year-old naptime and bedtime are the two most common times to read because your child is relaxed and calm. Always give your child your full attention when reading and encourage participation from your toddler while reading.
Here are some other tips to get your one-year-old to like books.
- Let your toddler pick out the book. Give your child an option of three books and read the one they want to hear.
- Show your toddler how to turn the pages.
- Talk about the pictures and ask your child to find things on the pages. Ask what they see and point our emotions in the pictures.
- When your child is old enough to repeat familiar or repetitive phrases, let your child finish the sentence. This helps your child learn more about reading than you realize.
