What Are Sight Words
Sight words are high frequency words used in the English language. Commonly this is a set of about 100 words that keeps reappearing on almost any page of our reading and writing. Who, the, he, were, does, their, me, be are a few examples.
Often these words do not have a concrete image that accompanies them. Thus, they simply must be memorised and understood. Educator Dr. Edward William Dolch developed the list of the words which comprise 80% of what you would find in a typical childrens book. Once a child knows this list of words, it makes reading much easier, because the child can then focus his or her attention on the remaining words.
The Dolch words are commonly divided into groups by grade level, ranging from pre-kindergarten to third grade, with a separate list of nouns.

Which Sight Words Do You Use
You are probably aware that there are different sight word lists floating around. These lists have been used for a long time and are certainly fine to use, but I am always on the search to use what is developmentally appropriate for kids. As a homeschool mama I have this amazing opportunity to enrich and engage her education but do so with lessons and skills that are developmentally appropriate. I have found that my philosophy of education aligns nicely with Fountas & Pinnell who are leading researchers in the field of literacy. I use their recommended kindergarten sight words. You can grab the free printable list here.

How To Make Diy Kindergarten Sight Word Flashcards
Making the sight word flashcards is easy, but does take a little time, depending on how detailed you are with them. I liked the colors of the card stock and think they make them more fun.
On a piece of card stock or an index card, place the stencil and color in each letter with a metallic pen. I like the color of the metallic pens, but you could use any marker that dries quickly and doesnt bleed for this project.
After your words are printed on the card, punch a hole or two in the corner or along the top and secure them with a plastic ring. In a pinch, a string or a zip tie would also work. Now you have a set of sight word flashcards that are easy to flip through and wont get separated.
If you dont have all of these items on hand or dont want to purchase more than you need, this flashcard set from Amazon has everything you need to make your own DIY flashcards. You wont even need a hole punch!

How To Help Your Child Learn With Sight Word Flashcards
These printable sight word flashcards can be very beneficial for your young child and can improve their reading abilities significantly. However, there are a few key tips to keep in mind as you use them to optimize your childs learning:
1. Be Consistent
The more you expose your child to learning experiences, the quicker they will pick up what youre teaching. So pick a time of the day where you can practice a couple of words at a time.
I love to do flashcards at bedtime when my daughter is winding down and calm. For some, you may want to pick right after breakfast or while theyre brushing their teeth. Whatever time you think your child can focus and learn is great.
Then, make sure you stick to that routine every day or every other day to keep the new skills fresh in their mind. Try not to skip a few days or a whole week because your child may lose any previous progress they were making.
2. Dont Give Them Too Much at Once
You dont want to overwhelm your child by trying to have them memorize all of these words at once. Start with only a few words at a time and work on those for several days or weeks or however long it takes for them to master those. Once theyve perfected the first set, move on to the next set.
Dont start new words until theyve completely got the old ones down! The words are color-coded by letter so you can try to group them that way or group all the words in a certain letter family together as well.
3. Make it Fun!
File will appear immediately.
