Kindergarten Sight Word Flash Cards

Sight words, or High-Frequency Words, are words that your Kindergartener should be able to recognize by sight while learning to read. These words appear frequently in printed text and are often the base of larger words.

They are also phonetically irregular and cant be sounded out. Words like at, do, the, has, and got are examples of sight words or high-frequency words.

Primer Sight Word Flash Cards

My 3-year-old daughter just recently learned all of her letter sounds! I cant take all the credit though as shes been watching this awesome Netflix show, LeapFrog Letter Factory . Within a few days, she was reciting the sounds that each letter of the alphabet makes to the catchy tune from the show.

Since she learned those so quickly, I decided that I should take her learning to the next level which is reading! Therefore, our next step in learning to read is sounding out small words and recognizing sight words.

Before having children of my own, I didnt realize that learning to read can start at such a young age! Two-year-olds are capable of recognizing, saying, and learning letters which is the foundation of learning to read.

Once they master the alphabet, they can begin working on learning the letter sounds and blending them all together to form words.

I created these sight word flashcards for preschool-aged children to get a head start on sight words and learning to read. If youre consistent with doing a couple of words a day, your child should be on track for learning a ton of new words in no time!

You can use these cards and recording sheets in a variety of ways.

The first option is to turn the cards upside down, in a pile. Have children pull one card, identify the word by reading and speaking the word, then write the word on the recording sheet. If you would like they could write the word multiple times. Move onto the next card when you are both ready.

Our Take: With their simple design, these cards are perfect for older children who need to look at the word and know it without the help of a picture. These sight words are clear and written in a bold font.

What we like: This pack comes with over 500 word cards and a dry-erase marker for kids to practice writing the words on the back of the card.

What we dislike: This pack is one of the pricier options on this list.

Printable Sight Words Flash Cards

You could print two sets of the flash cards and use it as a memory game. Start with as many words as you would like, 5, 10, or more. Turn the cards upside down, mix up, and put in even rows. Have the child pick two cards, if they match pull the cards from the game. At this time I like to have the child read the word and spell the word out. You could also incorporate the recording sheet and have the child write the word. If the two cards chosen do not match, turn them back over and the next person takes a turn.

Give the child a set of the sight word flash cards. Ask them to put them in alphabetical order. Ask the child to pick one or more sight word flashcards and create a sentence with them. This could be written on the recording sheet or just spoken out loud.

Use these flashcards however you would like. The possibilities are endless!

How To Help Your Child Learn With Sight Word Flashcards

These printable sight word flashcards can be very beneficial for your young child and can improve their reading abilities significantly. However, there are a few key tips to keep in mind as you use them to optimize your childs learning:

1. Be Consistent

The more you expose your child to learning experiences, the quicker they will pick up what youre teaching. So pick a time of the day where you can practice a couple of words at a time.

I love to do flashcards at bedtime when my daughter is winding down and calm. For some, you may want to pick right after breakfast or while theyre brushing their teeth. Whatever time you think your child can focus and learn is great.

Then, make sure you stick to that routine every day or every other day to keep the new skills fresh in their mind. Try not to skip a few days or a whole week because your child may lose any previous progress they were making.

2. Dont Give Them Too Much at Once

You dont want to overwhelm your child by trying to have them memorize all of these words at once. Start with only a few words at a time and work on those for several days or weeks or however long it takes for them to master those. Once theyve perfected the first set, move on to the next set.

Dont start new words until theyve completely got the old ones down! The words are color-coded by letter so you can try to group them that way or group all the words in a certain letter family together as well.

3. Make it Fun!

How Do I Use Flashcards

Free Printable Sight Words Flash Cards

Sight word flashcards can be boring and monotonous if children are just asked to look at the card and say the word. Instead of sitting your child in front of a pile of cards, get creative.

Flashcards can be hung on a piece of string with clothespins across the kitchen. Children can work on fine motor skills while hanging the cards, then read the words aloud. Once the words are mastered, children can take them down and hang new words. Children can also use a hole punch to punch holes around the edges of the card every time they say the word aloud to track practice and work on fine motor skills at the same time.

Parents can give their children a pack of flashcards and a roll of tape and have the child read the card, then go find that item in the house and tape the flashcard to the item, such as lamp, table and fork. Parents can also fill a small sandwich bag with blue hair gel, then put the bag of hair gel over the card and have the child trace the word in the hair gel with their finger.

Keep a stack of flashcards next to the bathtub. Spray shaving cream on the side of the tub and have the child look at the flashcard, say the word, then write the word in the shaving cream with their finger to build letter formation skills. Keep some flashcards outside with sidewalk chalk. Have the child say the word, then write it on the sidewalk with the chalk.

Flashcards are learning aids that have images, symbols and words to help children connect what they see and hear to the world around them. These cards come in packs, like a traditional deck of cards, but are themed to an area of learning. There are flashcards for everything from math and numbers to sight words and reading comprehension. Sight word flashcards use phonetics to help children connect written symbols to verbal words and vice versa.

Our take: Children can trace the letters, words and animals with the refillable water pen to make the images show up.

What we like: The water pen is large and easy for tiny hands to grasp and manipulate. Tracing with water is fun and reinforces the letter formation. Once the water dries, the tracing goes away, making these cards reusable.

What we dislike: While this game will begin to teach letter identification, phonics and simple words, some of the words are too complicated for sight words, such as alligator and elephant.
