First 100 Fry Sight Words
Fry words are listed by how frequently they appear in literature and the English language. So, the first 100 words included in the Fry list are the 100 most common words. They are broken down into groups of 25 below.

Kindergarten Sentences Using Sight Words
There are lots of sentences that can be framed using kindergarten sight words. Here are a few examples:
1. This is a yellow school bus.
2. I can see the stars.
3. This is my pen.
4. I ate well.
5. Can you help me, please?
6. I go to school.
7. I saw a big blue whale in my dream.
8. This is a pretty dress.
9. We played in the garden and came back soon.
10. My brother rides a red bicycle.
11. They ran away when they saw a big dog in my home.
12. They say that they have a brown table at their house.
13. A saw a little white cat under the tree.
14. I went to the market with my friend.
15. I do not want to go eat pizza today.

How To Use The Dolch Words:
- Play games with them, cut the cards out and use them as flash cards.
- Use oral reading activities with the cards. Hold up the word, and use a sentence with a blank prompting the child to state the word. For instance: “I liked that movie so much that I watched it _________ .”
- Use and oral cloze activity, placing three cards, one that fills the cloze. You can have the child point to the correct word. This is especially good for children with reading skills but apraxia. i.e. John went to the park to
- Shuffle the Dolch cards, turn them over one at a time and use them in a sentence.
- Have students go back and highlight the word wall words in their journal entries or free writing.
Daily routine use of the words will build reading confidence. For students with learning disabilities, these words can be learned developmentally, beginning with the pre-primer list. There are five lists offering appropriate words for the Pre-Primer, Primer, 1st Grade, 2nd Grade, and 3rd Grade reading levels. Word cards for all 44 spelling sounds are available and can be great additions to your spelling program and word walls.

Here is a set of free Dolch Sight Words Lists for teachers and parents of Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st Grade, 2nd Grade, and 3rd Grade Students. Dolch Sights Words are a collection of common words that every child should know. The lists were compiled in 1936 by Edward William Dolch, and remain highly relevant in childhood education to this day. There are 220 Dolch Sight Words in all. For your convenience, I have divided these sight words across five lists: Pre-K Sight Words, Kindergarten Sight Words, First Grade Sight Words, Second Grade Sight Words, and Third Grade Sight Words. Each Dolch Sight Word has a check box next to it. Parents or teachers and check the word off the list when they feel their child has a true understanding of the word.

How Many Sight Words Should A Kindergartner Know
The Dolch Sight Words list for kindergarten includes 52 frequent words. When combined with the 40 words on the Dolch list for preschool, that makes a total of 92 words that kindergartners might know.
It is important to keep in mind that kids develop reading skills at different rates. If your child is ahead or behind, that is ok. Make sure to practice consistently to help your child continue to improve.
It is also helpful to make sure your child knows the letter sounds and understands how to blend sounds to make new words using phonics, before introducing the idea of sight words.

Why Teach Sight Words
Before we get to the lists themselves, it may help to understand why sight words are so important.
When were teaching students to read, were working on a number of different concepts that will help them sound out the words that are in front of them.
Theyll learn the letters of the alphabet and the sounds that those letters make and as they progress, theyll learn to sound out vowel teams and consonant blends.
But, what happens when they come across a word that doesnt follow the typical phonetic rules like the, was, or of?
On the path of learning to read, words like these act like big stop signs since they cant be decoded, meaning kids cant sound them out.
And for those that can be decoded?
Well, if a student has to stop reading every time they come across the words it or is because they need to sound them out, their fluency and comprehension would suffer greatly.
Teaching sight words like those in the Dolch word lists ensures that your students will not only read more fluently but that theyll retain and comprehend more of what they read as well.
Kindergarten Dolch Sight Word List
Dolch sight words are high frequency words that students in kindergarten, first, and second grade often come across in a reading passage. Young children may also refer to them as flash words, basic sight words, snap words, or popcorn words.
If your curriculum is following the Dolch word lists, the following words are what they will learn by the end of the year.

Please keep in mind, Dolch words are not the only high-frequency sight words covered in state curriculum standards. On the Common Core website, you will find a specific list is not printed in the common core state standards. Instead of a list of sight words, the standard may be worded as such: Read Common High-Frequency Words by Sight.
Typically, each district is responsible for mapping out the kindergarten sight word list of their choice, whether its Dolch or Fry.

Q: How Many Sight Words Should Kindergarteners Learn
A: There are varying opinions as to how many words children should learn. Some literacy experts like Tim Shanahan believe that kindergarteners should master 20 sight words by the end of kindergarten. The Dolch word list has 40 words listed for Pre-K students and some school districts require that kindergarteners learn 100 sight words by the end of the school year. Consider your childrens progress and interest levels as well as your school districts expectation to help decide on the appropriate number of sight words for your children.

How Do You Find Them
One way to help kids identify their sight words in sentences is to play a modified version of I Spy. Instead of looking for objects, they are tasked with finding sight words. Give them a highlighter or highlighter tape to cover the word once they have found it.
Since kindergarteners have a limited reading vocabulary, make the sentences as uncomplicated as possible. Even three-word sentences allow students to practice finding and identifying sight words. If you want to make it more challenging, add a couple of sight words in each sentence!
Q: What Order Should I Teach Sight Words
A: There is no one set prescribed order to teach sight words. Some teachers and parents teach the sight words from the Dolch or Fry lists in alphabetical order. Others use the lists and create their own order. Consider using the Frequency Fry List that has words ranked by the frequency of use for reading and writing. To help children learn sight words and get them to stick, create your own lists to teach students the words not only in isolation, but also in context. For example, if you decide to read a specific book, teach the sight words from the book you are reading. This gives children practice reading the word in isolation and also helps them to see how the word is used in language.

How Many Sight Words Should My Child Learn At Once
Your kindergartner should not learn more than than a couple of sight words at a time. Introduce the words in small groups to make them easy to remember. Once your child has had practice with a small group of words, you can add a few more. Remember to go back and review the words your child already knows regularly as well.
