Its OK for children to take their time understanding math concepts. One day, they may know how to count from one to 20, and the next day, they may stop at 14.
This is all a part of the process, and they will eventually get there. Remember to have patience for your young learner. They need your positive reinforcement and encouragement.
Learning Shapes With Geoboards
Many parents or preschool teachers use geoboards to explore the different geometric shapes. If you cant afford a commercial geoboard, its actually pretty easy to create one. Just grab a large corkboard, a few push pins, and a few rubber bands.
It only takes a few minutes to arrange the push pins on the geoboard, just make sure theyre arranged in parallel rows and columns to facilitate the activity. Create a few task cards in advance, with a task line and an image of a certain shape that the child is supposed to create on the geoboard.
For instance, if the child gets a task card with a rectangle on it, and the task says: I can create a rectangle, then the child uses the rubber band to create a rectangle.
As children manipulate the rubber bands and re-create the images from the task cards, they are working on their attention spans and fine motor skills, while memorizing what a specific geometric shape looks like.

Have A Game Of What Time Is It Mr Wolf
If its been awhile since you played this game, Im going to let you in on a secret: this old classic doesnt actually have much to do with telling time .
Heres how to play:
- One person is the wolf .
- Whoever isnt the wolf asks, What time is it, Mr. Wolf?
- The wolf replies with an oclock number
- The non-wolf children take however many of steps that correspond to the time the wolf said
- Occasionally the wolf can choose for it to be dinner time! and cause lots of giggles as they chase everyone back to the start!
This outdoor math game can be played with zero equipment, any place, any time!
Search And Find Worksheets
Search and find puzzles are always a hit around here and so easy to make for any holiday or season. Improve visual processing skills, fine motor skills, and math skills. Draw A Race Car Track
Use chalk to draw a track for toy race cars. You can extend and adapt mathematically by having children make a longer way or add in different routes to get to the finish line.
Not only will they love zooming their cars along the track, but you can develop vocabulary too.
You can also use plastic and wooden tracks, which encourage problem-solving and use of space.
Challenge them to make a track that loops back together, or that fits within a confined area but uses all of the pieces.
Its not necessarily about them getting it right but the design and learning skills they develop while changing and adapting.

Math Skills For Kindergartners
Your kindergartner will build on all the basic math skills they learned in preschool identifying shapes, recognizing patterns, counting, and grouping by category. This year they’ll be expected to take them to the next level .
Go on a number hunt. When you’re out running errands, have your child look for numbers in street and store signs, and license plates. Call out the numbers as you find them. Being able to recognize numbers up to 20 is an important skill at this age.
Connect the dots. Numbered connect-the-dot activities will help your child recognize number sequencing. Buy coloring books with connect-the-dot themes or print out free online templates.
Make a phone call. Write the phone number of a friend or relative down on a piece of paper. To give your child practice reading numbers left to right, have your child dial the number
Estimate the weight of a household object. Ask your child to guess the weight of a bag of flour, a dictionary, or a gallon of milk. Then show them how to use a scale to find out the real weight. Have them estimate their own weight, and that of other family members. While your child’s guesses may be way off, you’re introducing them to the concepts of weight and estimating.
Go on a shape search around the house. Shapes are everywhere. Go around the house and hunt for squares, triangles, circles, stars any kind of shape. Have your child draw and cut different shapes out of construction paper.

Math: One Part Of The Whole
Math skills are just one part of a larger web of skills that children are developing in the early yearsincluding language skills, physical skills, and social skills. Each of these skill areas is dependent on and influences the others.
Trina was stacking blocks. She had put two square blocks on top of one another, then a triangle block on top of that. She discovered that no more blocks would balance on top of the triangle-shaped block. She looked up at her dad and showed him the block she couldnt get to stay on top, essentially telling him with her gesture, Dad, I need help figuring this out. Her father showed her that if she took the triangle block off and used a square one instead, she could stack more on top. She then added two more blocks to her tower before proudly showing her creation to her dad: Dada, Ook! Ook!
You can see in this ordinary interaction how all areas of Trinas development are working together. Her physical ability allows her to manipulate the blocks and use her thinking skills to execute her plan to make a tower. She uses her language and social skills as she asks her father for help. Her effective communication allows Dad to respond and provide the helps she needs . This then further builds her thinking skills as she learns how to solve the problem of making the tower taller.
What You Can Do
The tips below highlight ways that you can help your child learn early math skills by building on their natural curiosity and having fun together.
Shape up.
Play with shape-sorters. Talk with your child about each shapecount the sides, describe the colors. Make your own shapes by cutting large shapes out of colored construction paper. Ask your child to hop on the circle or jump on the red shape.
Count and sort.
Gather together a basket of small toys, shells, pebbles or buttons. Count them with your child. Sort them based on size, color, or what they do .
Place the call.
With your 3-year-old, begin teaching her the address and phone number of your home. Talk with your child about how each house has a number, and how their house or apartment is one of a series, each with its own number.
What size is it?
Notice the sizes of objects in the world around you: That pink pocketbook is the biggest. The blue pocketbook is the smallest. Ask your child to think about his own size relative to other objects .
