A Rainforest In The Living Room
Having a large rainforest to talk about and add animals to is really handy, interactive, and fun for preschoolers to use.
I used 3 pieces of butcher paper and taped them together to be tall. Then I could add in the layers of the rainforest with plenty of space. Heres how I made it:
Youll need:
- Crayons or other coloring medium
To make the rainforest in your living room:
Cut 3 pieces of butcher paper. I made mine about 3-1/2 feet long each. Line them up one-on-top of each other and put a few pieces of packing tape at all the seams.
Flip over .
Cut out long pieces of brown from the brown construction paper. I made two cuts in each paper, which made 3 pieces.
Cut out tree tops from the green papers, using just-about the entire piece for each treetop.
Glue down the brown pieces to make tree trunks across the butcher paper. Make all the trees about the same height. Exceptmake 1 or 2 trees that are way taller than the rest.
Glue on the tree tops on the top of each trunk.
Using the crayons, fill in the bottom with greenery.
Tear large pieces of tissue paper and give them a slight crumple. Glue them along the bottom of the butcher paper. These are the shrubs and small plants.
LABEL:
Starting at the top, label those couple trees sticking out as the EMERGENT LAYER
Where the treetops all sit about the same height, label as the CANOPY
Under the canopy but above the floor, label UNDERSTORY
Along the ground, label as FOREST FLOOR
Now use some tape and hang it in a large wall space.

Estimating and Measuring:Use some green glass pebbles to turn them into frogs. Place a large leaf shape on the table. Let children predict how many frogs will fit on the leaf. Taking turns, each child places a frog on the leaf as they count aloud. Stop when the leaf is full. How many frogs fit on the leaf? Let children recount and place the matching number below. Place a second leaf shape on the table and repeat. Which leaf had room for the most frog?

Find The Rainforest On The Map
Use a large world map and make little rainforest markers. You could make little trees Then tape them around the areas of the world that are covered in rainforests. The vast majority of rainforests are located along and near the equator, where the weather is warm year-round.
This map really comes in handy when we are talking about where rainforests are located. It also is fun as we study different rainforest animals and find out where they live we can then look on the map and point to where they live. This map is a little smaller than mine and would be a great size!

Net Weaving: A Roof For The Rainforest Theme Corner
If you can find an old piece of netting this makes a good activity for helping improve fine motor skills.
Afterwards you can use the decorated netting to make a roof for your jungle corner.
You will need :
- A large- ish piece of netting
- Some strips of crepe paper or anything you can find to weave in and out of the netting.I used old plastic bags cut into strips, wool, newspaper, tissue paper in fact anything that will give a variety of textures.

Caps For Sale Activity
This book is not about the rainforest, but it is a great book about monkeys. After we read the story, we act it out. Our props are colored felt circles for pretend caps. One child is the peddler and the other children are the monkeys. Its a lot of fun because we get to shake our finger, and stamp our feet, and pretend to be mad.

Art Activities
EGG CARTON CATERPILLARS
Materials needed: a section of 3 cups from an egg carton for each child paint pipe cleaners antennae googly eyes and glue
In advance, poke 2 holes in the top of one of the end cups to place the antennae into.
The children paint their caterpillars and glue on the eyes.
They stick in the pipe cleaners.
When dry, try placing a few in your block area and around your room for some fun!
PAPER PLATE LADY BUGS
Materials Needed: white paper plates black, red and a variety of other colors of paint googly eyes small and large brushes.
Show the children pictures of ladybugs and then let them create their own. Don’t limit them to red and black ladybugs! You just never know what creations they’ll come up with!
SNAKES
Materials Needed: Paper with a circular snake drawn on it with a black permanent marker paint or markers and crayons
The children paint or decorate their snake. They cut on the black line and you will have a very long snake to hang from your ceilings!
Block Center
Add egg cartons and plastic bugs to your block area for some creepy, crawly block creations!

Art Activities
HAND PRINTED LEAVES OF THE RAIN FOREST LAYERS
Materials Needed: Provide large brown construction paper or very tall butcher paper. The children finger paint different colored leaves and tree tops on their trees.
NEWSPAPER TREES
Materials Needed: Lots of newspaper, scissors, green and brown paint
Roll newspapers together and tape. Make these as tall as you want.
The children should then paint them.
When dried, cut them about 1/4 of the way down from the top to make them look like trees with tree tops.
These could be painted to represent the different Rain Forest Layers based on the colors of paint you choose for each section of these trees.
COFFEE FILTER BUTTERFLIES
Materials Needed: coffee filters , markers, spray bottles with water or eye droppers and water, clothespins
The children color as much or little as they want.
They then spray or drop water onto the filters. This will spread the color beautifully.
When dried, clip the middles with clothespins and hang throughout the emergent rain forest layer in your classroom.

Rainforest Unit Study For Preschool
Planning a rainforest theme for your preschooler? Looking for all the best rainforest activities for play-based learning?
Rainforests are the oldest ecosystem on Earth and have such beauty to them. Im sure your children will have as much fun learning about their plants, animals, ecology, and climate as much as mine did.
In this post, well share 13 of our favorite rainforest activities for preschoolers.

Look Through A Diorama
Dioramas were always really interesting when I was young, and even today. If youve got a small clear storage container, a diorama is a great way to cross section the layers of the rainforest and see them clearly.
How to make a simple rainforest model in a clear container or even in a shoebox:
Place some green tissue paper on the bottom as the forest floor. Add any small green items you may have to create bushes and plants. I put down some green gemstones .
Next, you can use toilet paper tubes to create trees. My tubes are white, so instead I rolled up brown paper into trunk shapes. Cut two tiny slits opposite each other at the very top. Cut out a tree top out of green paper and insert it into the slits.
Next I draped over some green tissue paper in places to create a sort of blanket or canopy over the top of the forest. I also cut some blue paper to make a waterfall and river.
Its very simple looking, but it give a great visual to a preschooler about the layers of a rainforest!
Green Emerald Boa Craft For Preschoolers
We chose specifically to make a Green Emerald Boa snake, so we used green. But if you have a specific snake, change the color to whatever you choose! This is a great rainforest activity for toddlers as it really works on their cutting skills.
Youll need:
- glue stick
How to make a Emerald Tree Boa Snake:
Using the green piece of paper, draw the head of the snake. Then, draw a spiral around using the majority of the paper, and double back in order to draw the other side. Have your toddler cut out the spiral, and youll hold up the shape of the snake.
Draw a small red tongue and have your preschooler cut it out. Glue it to the head of the snake.
Glue on two googley eyes on the head of the snake.
We also made a Squirrel Monkey by drawing out the the monkey and having my daughter cut and color it.
