Add A New Word Each Day
Once your child can recognize words, you can start introducing at least one new sight word each day. In the beginning, you want to start slow.
Since sight words are based on memorization, thats why learning one word a day is perfect for this age level.
While you should introduce one new word a day, remember to review past sight words that you practiced with them before. Its crucial to go over these sight words so they wont forget them.
Remember they are still preschoolers, repetition is key!
You never want to rush the learning process.
Forcing preschoolers to sit and complete work when they are not ready may cause the child to think negatively about learning.
Start With Two Letter Sight Words
Does anyone have a toddler that says no to absolutely everything?
Youll be hearing it all over again when you start teaching sight words because the word no is one of the easiest ones to recognize!
When you start out teaching a child sight words, its important to start small and build up to longer words. Starting with TWO letter words for them to memorize is going to be a lot easier than FOUR letter words.
Here are some two-letter sight words that you can start with: of, to, is, in, it, he, on, as, at, be, or, by, we, an, do, if, up, so, no, go
Once your little one has mastered the two-letter words, you can move onto three or more letter words!
While some of the words on this list can be sounded out and others can not, I think its easier to have your child just memorize the words so they can say it at a glance.
Memorizing Sight Words Does Not Equal Learning To Read
It used to be thought that reading is a visual memory process. This whole word or whole language approach assumed that if children see words often enough, those words will be stored in the memory as visual images.
This is why some beginning reader books feature predictable and repetitive sentences with lots of high-frequency words and pictures to provide context and help children guess the right word.

Preschool Write The Room

After Preschoolers Are Starting To Sound Out Words We Can Teach Sight Words
When your child understands the concept of decoding words and is ready to read a simple , youll need to teach the high frequency words that are also included in that book.
For example, if your child is learning to sound out CVC words, the books text may look like this:
The cat is big.
To read the sentence, your child needs to know the high frequency words THE and IS.
THE is not a word your child can sound out you will need to teach him/her to memorize the tricky parts. IS is not as tricky as you might think just teach your child that the letter S has two sounds: /s/ and /z/, and in the word IS it makes the sound /z/.

How Many Sight Words Are There
There are 52 sight words that are typically taught in kindergarten.
The Kindergarten Sight Words are:
all, am, are, at, ate, be, black, brown, but, came, did, do, eat, four, get, good, have, he, into, like, must, new, no, now, on, our, out, please, pretty, ran, ride, saw, say, she, so, soon, that, there, they, this, too, under, want, was, well, went, what, white, who, will, with, yes.
These are the 52 most commonly seen words in kindergarten level books. When a child is able to master those words, it not only makes it easier for them to read the words, it also improves their fluency or how quickly and smoothly they can read a passage.
How Important Are Sight Words
While there is no definitive answer to this question, most educators agree that teaching children sight words is an important part of reading instruction. By definition, sight words are words that cannot be sounded out, and must be learned by sight. Many of the most frequently used words in the English language are sight words, such as the, of, and and. Teaching children to recognize these words quickly and easily can help them become better, more fluent readers.

Q: How Many Sight Words Can Be Taught In A Day
A: Before determining a set number of sight words to teach, it is important to focus on the number of words that children are actually learning. It is important to consider the quality of their learning, not the quantity. Make certain that children can recognize sight words instantly and accurately before rushing to complete a certain number of words. Before starting, be sure to consider the childs age, motivation and memory skills. Keep in mind that a child who can instantly and accurately name 50 sight words is building a more solid reading foundation versus a child who kind of knows 100 words.
Start by introducing children to three to five new words during a given lesson. During the next days lesson, review the previously introduced words. If children remember all of the words, consider introducing three to five new words. If children do not remember the previous words, review the previously introduced words and wait to introduce new words. Also, consider reducing the number of words you introduce in each lesson to one or two words if children are struggling or feel overwhelmed.
Preparation Prior To Teaching
Prepare flashcards featuring the 40 Pre-K Dolch sight words when working with prekindergarten children. These are the words that children need to learn by sight, both through the letters and the shape of the word, in order to become fluent readers. There are Dolch sight word lists for every grade level, so students will build on what they learn for the next few years. The words for this age group are listed below, in alphabetical order.

How To Use The Pre
Here are a few ways in which you can use these sight word worksheets:
- Complete a worksheet as the word of the week.
- Complete a worksheet and then read a leveled reader focusing on that word.
- During your bedtime story, have your child point point out sight words.
- The read the word activity becomes a set of flash cards when cut out from their sheets.
Printable Sight Words Flash Cards
You could print two sets of the flash cards and use it as a memory game. Start with as many words as you would like, 5, 10, or more. Turn the cards upside down, mix up, and put in even rows. Have the child pick two cards, if they match pull the cards from the game. At this time I like to have the child read the word and spell the word out. You could also incorporate the recording sheet and have the child write the word. If the two cards chosen do not match, turn them back over and the next person takes a turn.
Give the child a set of the sight word flash cards. Ask them to put them in alphabetical order. Ask the child to pick one or more sight word flashcards and create a sentence with them. This could be written on the recording sheet or just spoken out loud.
Use these flashcards however you would like. The possibilities are endless!

Sight Word Teaching Success
The work you do teaching Pre-K students to learn, recognize and read sight words will provide them with a head start for success in kindergarten and beyond as they move forward in school. Learning Sight Words Is A Critical Skill For Kids To Learn How To Read
Teaching children how to learn sight words can be a challenge.

How Many Sight Words Should A Preschooler Know
If you need to know how to teach sight words in preschool, youve came to the right place.
Most people think teaching sight words in preschool can be a daunting task, but its rather easy. I follow the rule that preschool sight words should be learned gradually at a time, while reviewing all previously taught words, to build retention.
There is no set number of sight words that a preschooler should know however, the more the better. There are 35 Kindergarten sight words that need to be mastered by the end of the school year. In my classroom, this is what I aim to teach, but most students average around 20 by the end of the preschool year.
Why Teach Sight Words
Sight words can be hard for little ones to learn as they cannot be sounded out using phonetics. Give your kids a head start on reading by printing out our sight words practice activities at the bottom of the post. With tracing, word searches, and other fun activities, your child will be able to master words like and, here, said and the in no time!

As opinions on early literacy instruction vary greatly among educators. Some believe that teaching preschoolers basic sight words is an effective way to help them develop reading skills, while others contend that this approach puts undue pressure on young children and does not reflect how children naturally learn to read. Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to teach sight words to preschoolers should be made based on the individual needs of the child and the guidance of the childs teacher or tutor.

Q: What Order Should I Teach Sight Words
A: There is no one set prescribed order to teach sight words. Some teachers and parents teach the sight words from the Dolch or Fry lists in alphabetical order. Others use the lists and create their own order. Consider using the Frequency Fry List that has words ranked by the frequency of use for reading and writing. To help children learn sight words and get them to stick, create your own lists to teach students the words not only in isolation, but also in context. For example, if you decide to read a specific book, teach the sight words from the book you are reading. This gives children practice reading the word in isolation and also helps them to see how the word is used in language.
Should We Teach Sight Words In Preschool
First of all, lets clarify what sight words are. Some people will tell you that sight words are words that cannot be sounded out.
But researchers definition of sight words is different. Sight words are words that a reader recognizes instantly, without needing to sound out or guess.
Therefore, all beginning readers have a different sight word vocabulary, because they all know a different set of words by sight.
Its probably best to speak in terms of high frequency words. These are the most commonly used words in printed text.
Obviously, readers need to know high frequency words.
But HOW they learn these high frequency words matters.
Well get to that in a minute.

There Is No Need To Memorize Words That Can Be Decoded
A child who has memorized 100 words can only read 100 words. A child who has learned the sound-letter correspondences for the alphabet and several two-letter phonograms can read hundreds of words!
Instead of looking for strategies to make sight words stick in your childs memory, you can just teach your child how to READ them using phonics.
A problem with teaching sight words that are actually decodable is that children can begin to think that the English language doesnt make sense, and they might get in the habit of guessing at words instead of looking for patterns.
This is a real concern when young preschoolers are introduced to sight words before they have started developing phonemic awareness and understand that words are made up of individual sounds in a row.
Guessing at words is common among children who have been taught using the whole word approach. Instead of paying attention to each phonogram in an unknown word and sounding it out, they try to figure out the word based on clues from the initial letter, the shape of the word and accompanying pictures. They may even have been told to skip words they dont know!
An example is a child who says horse when the word is house because he or she is relying on how the word looks instead of noticing the ou and trying to decode the word sound by sound.
In contrast, learning phonics is all about learning the patterns of sound-letter correspondences to build the reading network in the brain.

Sight Word Flashcards Printable
You can use these cards and recording sheets in a variety of ways.
The first option is to turn the cards upside down, in a pile. Have children pull one card, identify the word by reading and speaking the word, then write the word on the recording sheet. If you would like they could write the word multiple times. Move onto the next card when you are both ready.
